Home Away From Home at Hattvika Lodge

If you plan to visit Lofoten, Norway and are still trying to decide on where you should stay, look no further. Hattvika Lodge is the place for you.

I spent 10 days here with several friends and our time at Hattvika Lodge was one of my favorite aspects of the trip. It turned out to be the perfect basecamp for all our adventures and Kristian, the owner, was always around to lend a helping hand. In fact, his presence alone was the cherry on top because he gave us a ridiculous amount of local knowledge and help. He stopped by every evening to check in and hear about what we got up to that day, and it was a lot of fun to talk about the various hikes we had accomplished.

About Hattvika Lodge:

Hattvika Lodge is located in a town called Ballstad. It’s a very photogenic town and has access to many different grocery stores, gas stations, and eateries in the area. We used it as the homebase for all of our adventures and having a warm place we could come back to to dry gear, warm up, cook a meal, and edit was a life saver.

For what we needed, the accommodations at Hattvika Lodge were perfect. We stayed in the Sørbua 1 unit and it had three levels to it. Downstairs were two bedrooms and two bathrooms (complete with toilet, sink, and an INCREDIBLY hot and relaxing shower). Both bedrooms had two twin beds in them and my guess is that they could also be joined together if you and your signifiant other wanted to share a bed.

The main level was where the kitchen and dining room were. The kitchen was fully furnished and had everything you could ask for: an oven, dishwasher, fridge, cooktop, etc. It also had a broad selection of plates, utensils, and glasses to choose from. There were also two more bedrooms on this main level, each with two twins beds as well (which I’m guessing could be combined like the other beds downstairs).

Upstairs was a little nook for relaxing, working, and/or admiring the weather through two sky lights (maybe even northern lights if conditions were right!). There were 4 chairs upstairs and in the summer it would be really nice because the skylights can open to let fresh air flow into the room.

Location and Proximity:

Hattvika Lodge is located right in the middle of two of the most famously photographed areas of Norway: Lofoten and Henningsvaer. It’s a 1 hour 22 minute drive to Å (where all the cool photos and buildings of Lofoten are located) and a 1 hour 20 minute drive to the Henningsvaer Stadium (the cool soccer field everyone takes photos of). At first we got a little worried that this might be a lot of driving for us to do, but we quickly realized that driving was one of our favorite aspects of being in Norway because it helped us see a lot more of the country and take photos of locations is a ton of different lighting conditions.

We did a ton of hiking while we were here and these were some of my favorites:

  • Ryten (it’s a really beautiful and epic mountain you can summit)

  • Kvalvika Beach

  • Bunes Beach

  • Reinebrigen

These are a couple other worthwhile hikes to mention and potentially look into if you want to hike. They’re located East of Hattvika Lodge and we were unable to do them because of time, but I’m sure they would be incredible as well:

  • Kongstinderne

  • Svolværgeita

  • Segla

At the end of the day Hattvika lodge was the perfect place for us to stay. It had a lot of benefits for us and more amenities than we could have asked for. The sauna was another really amazing aspect and something we utilized almost every day. If you’re thinking about visiting Norway or Lofoten, I highly recommend you look into staying here.
